looks good. new this morning, four american soldiers have been killed by at least one afghan police officer overnight. yesterday, two british troops were also killed in the scwawld green & blue attacks. in all, eight nato troops have died in those insider attacks in the past three days. they come as muslims around the world are protesting against the film made in the u.s. that mocks the prophet mohammed. this morning, there are new warnings from al-qaeda. as fox's rick leventhal reports, the terror network is calling for attacks on americans. >> reporter: al-qaeda in the arabian peninsula, calling for more attacks on u.s. embassies overseas n an internet message, they say their ultimate goal is to banish u.s. consulates from muslim countries. the violence began on the anniversary of 9/11, at the u.s. embassy in egypt, eventually spreading to the consulate in behazi, libya, where the american ambassador and three others were killed.

now, one year after the downfall of colonel moammar gadhafi, u.s. leaders are on the hunt. this backlash from some in the muslim world, being blamed on a 13-minute-long movie trailer produced last year and uploaded to youtube this summer. one of the men behind the video mocking islam is seen here, the 55-year-old excon, shrouded by a scarf, surrounded by police, nakoula basseley nakoula of california, questioned early this morning. >> he was never handcuffed, he was never arrested, never detained, never in custody. it was all voluntary. >> reporter: a probation after doing time for check cutting scheme, nakoula's attorney is pleading for his client's privacy. >> we're not going to answer questions today. you're keeping his young children prisoners in their own home because they are afraid to come out. >> reporter: the threat remains high for westerners overseas and the state department is warning americans traveling and living

abroad, especially in libya, tunisia and sudan, if your jobs aren't essential, you should get out now. rick leventhal, fox news. orthodox churches across the country are bracing themselves because of the antimuslim field. here in fairfax, at st. marks, leaders were quick to condemn the film. as they tell fox 5 audrey barns, they are hoping its annual egyptian festival will show what they are really about. >> reporter: the orthodox church has its roots in egypt and the egyptian festival is an event church members at st. marks orthodox church in fairfax look forward to every year. this year, some of the talk centered on the antiislam film, "the innocence of muslims" promoted by a fellow church member in california. it portrays them as a homosexual

and child abuser, sparking protest in the middle east and is implicated in the attack that killed the u.s. ambassador to libya and other americans. >> i've seen a couple of seconds, which was more than enough to be offended by it. and i understand why people would be offended and disapprove of the film. >> reporter: father paul says the film goes against everything the coptic orthodox church stands for. >> we condemn any acts that create hatred among any religion or direct people's hatred toward any religious. >> reporter: st. marks opened the church doors for the festival so the community could learn more about their faith. >> we're christian first, orthodox second, coptic third. >> reporter: a religious minority in egypt, and muslims is reality. in fact, the man behind the film says his intent was to highlight discrimination against the coptic church by muslims.

>> that probably has more to do with the political situation in egypt, but, no, it's not what we're taught at all. we're taught the teachings of christ, just as any other christian church is taught and that's what we live by. >> reporter: hopefully those peaceful values will help stem the violence soon. audrey barns, fox 5 news. . also new this morning, in prince george's county, a deadly pedestrian accident. this happened around 9:00 last night. the adult male victim was transported to the hospital, but did not survive his injuries. police say the vehicle did stay on the scene. no word on whether any charges will be filed. and the redskins on fox today. today's game, right here on fox 5 starts at 4:00 this afternoon. now, they are in st. louis for their second straight road game and fox 5's dave roth is there. >> reporter: good morning from st. louis, here underneath the arch and waiting for today's

redskins and rams battle, which will be the fifth straight year these two teams have met, which is odd because they are not in the same division. guess you could say it's deja vu in the loop. n]♪ >> reporter: the redskins are used to battling it out each and every year with the likes of their nfc east brethren, you know, giants, eagles, cowboys. but the rams? for the fifth straight year, the redskins, despite playing in different division, will lock horns with st. louis. talk about quirky scheduling. n]♪ >> i mean, finishing last in the division, you'll play the last place team in the rest of the nfc divisions that finished fourth as well. hopefully this year we can change it. obviously, we came out, had a great game last week. this is our next big test. we haven't fared against them too well as far as coming out with great energy. we beat them last year, but it

wisconsin, a circuit court judge struck down governor scott walker's union-bugs law. now the governor says he'll appeal to the state supreme court. earlier this year, the battle over union rights made headlines when protesters occupied the statehouse. this morning, wisconsin's attorney general says he will enforce the law that ended collective bargaining while the governor appeals the case. in chicago, the teachers strike could soon be over. the union is meeting today to review a proposed contract and members will decide if they will end the week-old strike. that's supposed to happen at 3:00 this afternoon. teachers are being told to return to work tomorrow to prepare their classrooms. also in chicago, fbi agents stop an alleged terror attack in the windy city. 18-year-old adele darud was arrested after he tried to detonate what he thought was a car bomb outside a downtown chicago bar. it was part of an undercover operation where agents pretended to be terrorists and gave him a fake car bomb. the feds say they have been

monitoring darud since may after he posted material online in may about killing americans. first a french magazine, now a newspaper in ireland is publishing topless photos of the dutches of cambridge. they were taken when princess kate and prince william were sunbathing in france. despite the threat of legal action, a newspaper in italy is also publishing the pictures. around the world, targeting americans continue. while there have been dozens of demonstrators -- why this is all happening, coming up next.



. we continue to follow the protests against the united states in the wake of that antimuslim film. take a look at this map. you can see just how widespread

the protests are. even though many have been violent, there were also several peaceful protests in many countries. and the violent protests were actually a lot smaller than some may have expected. now, many americans just really don't understand why these protests are breaking out across the world. joining me in studio now to help break it down, michael han lan, specialist in foreign policy. good morning, michael. thank you for coming in. >> my pleasure. >> i have to say, the first question i have when these protests first started breaking out, seemed to be a very serious situation. then as they continue to go on and be a little bit sporadic, i wonder how much is authentic, related to the film, how much of it is just an excuse to protest america? >> i think it's a great question. it's also very important you emphasize correctly, but in a way a lot of people haven't, these protests are generally small. a number of them are nonviolent. today it's already midday sunday and most of the islamic world and we haven't seen the same level of protests around the world that we saw on friday. friday is the big day of prayer,

so people congregate, so you have group dynamics. and of course the crisis began last tuesday. doesn't mean it's over. doesn't mean that anybody should be too reassured. but i think this is the sort of thing that had a spike and is now calming down to sort of the normal level of antiamericannism. there is a general amount of that. we have to cope with it, expect future incidents like this, i'm afraid. >> and seems like we see protests similar to that here in the united states. we've seen occupy wall street. we've seen -- i was thinking back even to the ims protests. seemed to be very -- not terribly violent, but still very angry. and so are these -- is there a group out there that's sort of professional protesters? >> well, yeah, there's some of that. there are, of course, two things that make this more serious than the kinds of issues we see the united states. one of them is al-qaeda is related. it's related to al-qaeda in one way or another. the second issue is that these are largely in chaos right now,

some of them anyway. they don't have functioning armies and police. and that means that it doesn't take more than a few bad apples to really make something go awry. we've had the shootings at mosks and other things in the united states. this is more the violent incidents we've had tragically in a few cases here, not so much like occupy wall street. it's a much more serious thing than that. but a lot of it has to do with these societies in transitions. armies and police are not totally formed up and their governments are still struggling to give voice to these protests, but not let them go too far. >> so what is an appropriate response from the united states government in your opinion? >> i think you have to view the kind of security we had in benghazi as inadequate. you're going to have to do an assessment of where we need to have these kinds of exposed facilities. and there's been a lot of criticism ever since the embassy

bombings in africa in the nineties. i think you'll have to have these embassies and consulates be well protected, a place where you can hunker down and close out access until the threat passes. >> u.s. ambassador susan rice was saying this morning -- i'm sorry, she spoke yesterday. she said ambassador chris stevens, what het to see is us packing up shop and totally leaving. >> i think she's totally right. ambassador rice has done a great job, as has secretary clinton. we have to keep sending the message of staying in power, but it doesn't mean we have to be in unfortunate fide or unprotected positions. you're going to take some casualties, but it's a different sort of thing when an ambassador is killed. that suggests the whole mission is in jeopardy. that's what's going on here. people knew ambassador stevens, liked him, admired him. but also when an embassy and ambassador is attacked, ambassador is killed, it suggests the whole u.s. mission is in jeopardy. that's what we have to take on

by fortifying these kinds of places and taking care of our top people. not that they are more important than others. >> but they are a symbol. >> they are a symbol. >> do you think we'll ever see those governments cracking down or do they have to walk a fine line, too? >> they have got to crack down. president obama did a good job of reminding the egyptians this week that it's one thing to be angry about a video, but it's something else than to be lax in protecting an embassy on your ground. there is no ambiguity on this point. same time, when there is a video like this, which i think is terrible, and i think more americans should be saying it is terrible, when that kind of thing happens, we need to expect some protests, but we also need to expect local governments to take care of our people abroad. >> do you see a connection with 9/11, or no? >> i'm not so sure. i think the way you began the whole piece, this sort of thing

may happen, that this sort of thing is in a way, you know, looking for a pretext, looking for an excuse. we have to expect that. i don't know if it was 9/11, but there will be targets of opportunity. there will be things that happen that get people angry, and whether it's another anniversary of something, whether it is just some other incident like this one, we just have to be ready. and these kinds of things will happen again. i don't expect this upcoming week to be another week of the same sort of thing, but it will happen again and we got to be ready. >> thank you so much for joining us this morning and helping us sort of understand the situation. >> my pleasure. thank you. and again, more questions this morning after the american ambassador to libya was killed in the attack. it is a big topic on fox news sunday. the u.s. ambassador to the united nations is on the show today. coming up next, we will speak with host chris wallace. >> plus, gwen will be back with a look at the work week weather. fox 5 morning news will be back right after this.

. well, was there advanced warnings of the attacks in libya? the white house says there was no actionable intelligence that the killing of the american ambassador was killed. even though the embassy in cairo warned the consulate in benghazi that, quote, the mob is coming, there was not enough time to beef up security. but as fox reports, some congressmen think the attack should have been expected. >> reporter: there was an ied attack, improvised explosive device attack on that consulate in libya in june. and the red cross in benghazi came under fire in august. the white house insists that the 9/11 attack on the consulate in benghazi came in response to a privately made video posted online in june that muslims found offensive. here's what the president said about it in his weekly radio and internet address. >> there's no religion that condones the targeting of innocent men and women. there's no excuse for attacks on our embassies and consulates. so long as i am commander in

chief, the united states will never tolerate efforts to harm our fellow americans. >> reporter: the bodies of ambassador chris stevens and the three other americans killed in the attack were brought back to andrews air force base on friday. the white house has been saying that there was no information to suggest that this was a preplanned attack. but the republican chairman of the house intelligence committee isn't so sure. >> there is no high degree of confidence that it was or was not premeditated. there are still analysts who disagree, from our civilian agencies and our department of defense agencies. i have looked at all the information. i still have a lot more questions to say definitively it was just a spontaneous event. >> reporter: the obama administration says it asked google, which owns youtube, to look at the video and make sure that it meets its standards. in response, youtube said in a statement, this video, widely available on the web, is clearly within our guidelines and so it will stay on youtube. however, we have restricted access to it in countries where

it is illegal, such as india and indonesia, as well as egypt, given the very sensitive situations in these countries. youtube also says it did not restrict that video in those countries because of the white house inquiry. at the white house, molly henneberg, fox news. . it's about to explode. the american disengagement, lack of leadership leading from behind is leading to uncertainty and doubt on all fronts. >> it was a coordinated military-style commando-type raid that had both direct prior and indirect prior military movements involved in it. this was a well-planned, well-targeted event, no doubt about it. congressman rogers, head of the house intelligence committee commented about the attack in libya that killed the american ambassador. congressman rogers is a guest on

fox news this morning. chris wallace joins me with a preview. good morning, chris. >> good morning, melanie. >> we started off the week remembering 9/11. by the end of that day, we had the death of a u.s. ambassador at the hands of armed rebels. some prominent americans are saying there is a connection. >> well, certainly it appears that the video, in the case of cairo -- i'm not so quite as sure in terms of libya. in terms of cairo, the video insulting the prophet mohammed was the spark plug. the administration would have us believe that all of these, this wave of violence against american personnel and interests across the middle east, more than two dozen countries, that all of that is just because of the video, has nothing do t.o. do with u.s. policies. i think that's questionable. we'll be talking today to ambassador susan rice, the american ambassador to the united nations. we'll also be talking, as mentioned, to the chairman of the house intelligence committee, mike rogers. i think those are two of the key questions. one, in terms of this wave of violence, what's the reason and

is there anything the u.s. could have done in terms of our policies to prevent it? and then what exactly went down in benghazi in that slaughter of the four americans? was it a protest that escalated or was it in fact a terror attack maybe taking advantage of this protest on an unrelated issue, was it a terror attack that involved elements of al-qaeda? >> and speaking to your comments about u.s. ambassador susan rice, i was looking around before preparing for this interview and noticed she gave an interview yesterday to the ohio state newspaper and her quote was that the 'em baez attacks are not a reaction against the united states, a reaction -- that they are, quote, a reaction against a video that's deeply, deeply offensive to many people. so that seems to be, again, that's sort of the administration line, but there is very strong antiamerican sentiment, as we've seen. >> well, that's certainly one of the questions i'll ask susan rice, because that is the line from the white house. we heard that from jake carney,

white house spokesman on friday. nothing to do with u.s. policy. now, it may be true. it also may be a convenient way to not have to answer questions about american policy, to say well, this is just a video and that's part of free choice, even if we don't like the video and we certainly -- the administration is not responsible for that. so that's something we'll pursue. >> and secretary of defense leon panetta is saying this morning he expects the violence level -- that the violence will start to level off. what is the appropriate response from the united states? >> well, there's a limit, particularly in the short-term to what we can do. i mean, obviously, one of the things we've done since the violence is to try to speak to these countries. i mean, it was very noticeable that in egypt, that these demonstrators were allowed to get so close to the embassy to scale the wall, to tear down the u.s. flag, to put up a radical islamic flag, and obviously what happened in benghazi, one of the things that the president has been doing and may have to continue to do is to talk to

leaders, like the president of egypt, president of libya, and to try to put some more pressure on them to stop the protests and to protect u.s. interests in those parts of the world and if part of that involves mentioning the fact that it's going to be awfully hard to get u.s. aid for those countries if there's more violence against americans, my guess is that's something he'll say. >> we're talking foreign policy as the headlines right now, not the economy. how is this going to affect the presidential race? >> i think it depends on what happens over the next eight weeks. if this kind of violence continues, you know, for the next few weeks if we continue to see radical islamics across the middle east burning american flings and attacking u.s. interests from embassies to fast food restaurants, to an american school in tunisia, i think it will have an impact and people will begin to say, yes, this president has had big foreign policy successes, national security successes, like killing osama bin laden, but is his policy working in that part of the world? on the other hand, if it begins

. movie reviewer kevin mccarthy was 106.7 the fan is just back from the international film festival and boy, does he have stories to tell. most notably, bill murray cleaning his jacket. but first, he gives fox 5 his exclusive review the latest installment of the "resident et's talk about the first movie that you've seen. the "resident evil." >> here's the deal. this movie did not screen to critics. so this is an exclusive review. they didn't screen it for obvious reasons. it's very, very bad. here's the deal. it's the fifth film in this the series. they ran out of plot points two films in. they were reaching for plot over

and over and over again. it's the same story. alice is fighting against the umbrella corporation and killing zombies in slow motion. i mean, that sounds great and all, but after four movies, i don't want to see a fifth movie doing the same thing again and paying $15.50 to see the same story happen over and over again. they add little intricacies in. michelle rodriguez is back in this one. but the problem is, it becomes laughable, overly dramatic, overly stupid, if i could use that word. there's just no point in seeing this movie you've already seen. it's unness. i personally thought it's going to be laughably bad. they didn't screen it to critics and that generally means a bad thing and it really rang true here. skip it. i gave it a one. >> let's talk about the toronto film festival. you had a lot of fun there? >> oh, my gosh, this is the second largest film festival in

the world behind cannes. for me, i walked into that city doing back flips and cart wheels. i was flipping out. it was amazing. one of the coolest experiences was bill murray. we have this really cool video. i walk in the room and i have a white dot on my suit. wait till you see this. here's the timer. she notices it. he gets up out of his chair. wait till you see this. you know, i'm going to clean kevin's suit! dr. peter begman from ghost busters cleaning my suit. look at this guy! i just could not believe it. thank you so much, mr. murray. i don't know what it was. i don't know what it was. conducive for them to be out there running. so good luck to all of them and hopefully everybody will get through the race with very much success. well, we're very successful in the weather department today, because we've got plenty of sunshine. as we begin with a look at our weather headlines, a pleasant sunday for you ahead, i'm happy to say. temperatures will continue to be near seasonal as we head into the extended period. we're keeping an eye on two systems and as we enter the beginning of the week, we'll see things just a little bit unsettled. but overall, not too bad at all. here's your satellite and radar composite. we've got a few clouds here. a ridge of high pressure building in, holding the sunshine into the course of the day. don't be dismayed by the clouds at all. yesterday's highs, 78 at national, 77 at dulles. these temperatures, a couple degrees off the seasonal mark, so not bad. we are starting out very comfortable this hour. 61 at dc. we've got 55 at gaithersburg, 57 degrees at baltimore. to the south, fredericksburg at 59.

a little cooler for hagerstown and martinsburg at 51 degrees. 57 at culpepper, 53 at dulles. so this ridge of high pressure is going to hold steady into the course of the day. no shortage of sunshine. as we head into tonight, it's going to slide its way off the coast. we've got a couple of systems, low pressure system to the south, strong frontal system that's going to move in from the west. that is going to set us up for showers by the time we hit the later part of monday. monday afternoon, into the evening hours, we may start to see a little bit of it. it will start to get increasingly more widespread as we head into monday night and tuesday. looks like a real soaker day, with some thunderstorms in the forecast. so be prepared. but as we start out on monday, we should be doing fairly well for the first part of the day. by midday today, 75 degrees with light winds. we're heading nice and comfortable by the time we hit the 5:00 hour. into the course of today, it's going to be just very, very pleasant. as i said, i'm going to really advise you to get out and enjoy

it. today's forecast, as we put it together, 79 degrees, mostly sunny, nice afternoon. tonight, cooling down to 61, partly cloudy skies, slight chance of a late overnight hours we could see a little bit of a shower. primarily into areas of southern maryland and northern virginia today might see a sprinkle or two, but not a total washout. here's a look at your fox 5 seven-day accuweather forecast and you can see we've got showers by monday afternoon, storms on tuesday before we're back to sunshine, melanie. dry weather, taking us right to the end of the weekend and a slight chance on saturday of seeing a shower or two. those temperatures, pretty comfortable. i think people can just enjoy it. let's focus on what a great weekend we've had and how it's going to end with everybody getting the sun. >> we like it. thanks, gwen. and going to sports breakfast now, the nats went into last night's game leading the braves by 8 1/2 games in the nl east. here's lindsay murphy with the

straight matches. well, talk about a big man on campus. basketball great shaquille o'neal campaigning on capitol hill. no, he's not running for office. he's using his star power to promote a campaign against binge drinking. fox 5 has the story. >> reporter: well, he needs no introduction. he's the legendary basketball player, a champion, done just about everything. now he's taking on an even bigger challenge. the one and only shaquille o'neal, tell us why you're in washington, dc and what does this have to do with binge drinking? >> well, we wanted to speak to congress. couple years ago, there was research on african americans and binge drinking. lot of people don't know what binge drinking is. it's drinking after you feel a little buzz and you take it to where you're all-out drunk. the problem with binge drinking is kids today, they binge drink, go hang out, drive home, make it

home, so nothing happens. what do you do? you do the same thing next weekend and the next weekend. we're just telling people to be more responsible, because there are tragic stories. only takes one mistake for a tragic story to be told. i just want to have everyone help me promote the message. i'll be going around, working with the students have their own campaign and i'll direct it. people drink for different reasons, whether it's peer pressure, grades, or just want to have fun. i direct the spot to them. and we encourage you to be more responsible and be more conscious. >> reporter: tell us why you decided to get involved in this. what about this got your attention to say i want to do this, i want to get in front of this campaign? >> it's important. you know,.
